Welcome

This website is designed to publicly share my learned experiences in spaces where water and communities meet and do not hold over time, but instead renegotiate, make and unmake one another, interact to form new unexpected possibilities. Over 25 years I have spent time on rivers, islands, lakes, and coastlines on every inhabited continent, interrogating water relationships. These spaces hold the potential for reimagining futures that effectively weave together multiple, simultaneous traditional, contemporary, and speculative worldviews. I do not believe that one way of knowing is enough to describe and confront planetary challenges. I do believe we need everybody in this moment.

These pages hold work that tells stories by combining science to measurement with art to feel and with maps technology and art to highlight intersectional overlaps that we can feel and experience as much as see, study, and know. Here you will find maps, art, articles and book chapters, audio, and soon-to-come, video materials. None of these communication tools is complete in isolation, just as no one way of knowing and believing truth is complete for a describing complex interdependent earth and social systems. As an academic, I engage with multiple epistemological and ontological approaches as necessary to make sense of our universe and our place in the universe. As an artist my practice is grounded in these dynamic, relational spaces of a continual becoming and I experiment with traditional forms such as printmaking, photography, and illustration and combine materials for new imaginative expressions on paper and in fabric. I work in the Borderlands, and find that they are not margins and are not just contact zones, but are multi-dimensional generative realities. My artwork is influenced by these spaces and the people in communities that invite me to join them. The written and visual stories I tell are an attempt at co-design and co-creation with community, following the rules of the academy for what makes an acceptable intellectual contribution.

I am drawn to these sites of encounter where distinct worlds meet and reshape one another because they are hard to pin down, unsettled, entangled, dynamic, inspiring, and open. I engage with this research not to resolve, but to stay with their tensions. I hope you will find yourself
