The following images were taken in 2016 in the Lower Mara River Basin of Tanzania. These portraits of local people are mostly Kurya ethnicity, a minority group of mainly cattleherders who live across the border of Tanzania and Kenya. During fieldwork, my team visited people in their traditional villages in this remote part of Tanzania. The World Bank is proposing water development along the Mara River to include dams in Kenya and an irrigation scheme with a water diversion in Tanzania that will displace about 11,000 people. This proposed change to the Mara River flow can alter life for the Kurya and critical ecosystems in the Serengeti National Park and the Mara Wetlands, and impacts may be further reaching into Lake Victoria.
